World Handball Championships-Kerry
Ladies bring home 5 gold medals
Kerry had unprecedented success
last week when Three Kerry Girls
won five World Titles and two others
were runners up. Prior to the Worlds
Kerry would have been confident
that Maria Daly would secure a
title as she has been playing outstanding
Handball All year. She won two
and the surprise player of the
Tournament was Sharon Twomey who
won three titles. Sharon from Ballymac
did very well and had to play two
finals in one day. She first played
in the U13 singles final and later
played in the U15 Doubles Final
with her partner Karen Lawlor from
Fitzgerald Jones Club in Tralee.
Karen won the first World Title
for her Club. All the players were
history makers.
The County Board honoured the
achievement by introducing the
World Champions to the attendance
at half time in the County Final
on Sunday. Handball is the only
GAA sport with a truly international
dimension and Kerry Ladies have
done well. We Congratulate all
the Girls.
These are the first World Titles
for Girls in the County. Dominic
Lynch of Glenbeigh has an Under
17 World title that he won the
last time the World Championships
were held in Ireland. The Ballymac
Girls and Karen Lawlor from Fitzgerald
Jones Club in Tralee brought the
first World Titles to their respective
Clubs.
